Leica DM500 biological microscope with integrated digital imaging — 45° EZTube with integrated FN20 eyepieces, plan objectives, and on-board image capture for records, referral and teaching.
Product Overview
The DM500 is Leica’s compound microscope for routine and teaching use. Its 45° EZTube carries the eyepieces integrated into the tubes with preset diopters — they cannot be lost, swapped or misadjusted between users, which matters in a practice where several people share one microscope.
The substage condenser arrives pre-installed, pre-focused and pre-centred, so the instrument is ready to use out of the box and stays aligned.
This version adds integrated digital imaging: the camera is part of the instrument rather than a separate head mounted on a third tube, so there is no adapter to match to a sensor and nothing to align. Captured images go to a phone, tablet or PC for the patient record, a referral opinion or a teaching session.
Key Features
- 45° inclined binocular EZTube — integrated 10×/20 eyepieces with preset diopters, nothing to lose or misadjust
- Plan objectives 4× / 10× / 40× / 100× oil — flat field across the whole image
- Pre-installed, pre-focused and pre-centred Abbe condenser — no alignment step before use
- Condenser slot takes phase contrast and darkfield sliders, including a 4-position phase slider
- LED illumination with continuous intensity control, 3 W — consistent colour temperature for stained smears
- Runs on mains 100–240 V or on 1.2 V NiMH rechargeable AA cells — usable during a power cut or on an ambulatory visit
- SafetyStage design limits damage when a slide is driven into an objective
- EZStore integrated handle and cord wrap — carried and stowed without loose cables
- Integrated digital imaging — capture to phone, tablet or PC without a separate camera head or adapter
- Observation stays binocular — the camera does not occupy a third tube or split the light away from the eyepieces

Why Choose DM500
- Integrated eyepieces with preset diopters — in a shared practice laboratory nobody has to reset the microscope before use, and eyepieces cannot go missing
- Pre-centred condenser — the instrument stays aligned, so image quality does not drift over months of use
- Battery capability — slide work continues during a power cut and the microscope can travel to a farm or stable
- Imaging built in — no camera head, adapter or alignment step, and the eyepiece view is unaffected
- Phase and darkfield slider slot — unstained wet preparations can be added later without changing microscope

FAQ
What slides does this microscope handle? Routine cytology smears (fine-needle aspirate, ear cytology, urine sediment), histopathology sections, faecal flotation and direct smears, and stained blood smears (Diff-Quik, Wright-Giemsa).
Why are the eyepieces fixed into the tubes? The EZTube integrates them deliberately. In a practice where several people share one microscope, eyepieces get swapped, dropped or lost and diopters get left on someone else’s setting. Integrated eyepieces with preset diopters remove all of that.
Can it really run on batteries? Yes — on 1.2 V NiMH rechargeable AA cells up to 2700 mAh. Do not fit non-rechargeable alkaline cells; the manufacturer’s manual specifically warns against them.
Can phase contrast be added later? Yes. The condenser has a slot for phase contrast and darkfield sliders, including a 4-position phase slider. Tell us which preparations you intend to read and we will quote the matching slider and objectives.
Is this a trinocular microscope? No. Observation stays binocular at 45° with integrated FN20 eyepieces; the imaging is built into the instrument rather than carried on a third tube. Practices that want a plain binocular without imaging should choose the standard DM500, listed separately.
What exactly does the camera capture, and to what? Please ask us to confirm the sensor, resolution, connection method and software for the current batch before ordering.
