An in-clinic chemistry analyser is one of the highest-impact equipment purchases a small-animal hospital can make. It also has the most diverse market — dry-slide, cassette, wet chemistry and centrifugal rotor systems all claim “10-minute results”. Here’s how to cut through the marketing.
1. Match the panel to your actual case-mix
Before comparing analyser brands, list the chemistry panels you order most often: pre-anaesthesia screens, geriatric wellness, suspected pancreatitis, liver enzymes. Then check which analyser covers those panels natively — without forcing add-on slides or “send-out” workflows for the missing analytes.
2. Cost per test, not cost per machine
An inexpensive analyser with expensive consumables can cost more over five years than a premium machine with bulk reagent pricing. Ask the vendor for total cost of ownership at your projected monthly volume — not the per-unit list price.
3. Time to result
For elective workflows, 12 minutes vs 7 minutes is irrelevant. For emergency triage and pre-anaesthesia screening, every minute matters. If your clinic handles trauma or emergency cases, prioritise speed.
4. Reagent stability and storage
In tropical Thai conditions, reagent stability matters. Some dry-slide systems are stable at room temperature for months. Others require refrigeration with strict cold-chain — adding to logistics complexity for branch clinics or remote practices.
5. Integration with your PIMS
Modern analysers can push results directly into the patient record in your practice information management system. Verify support for the PIMS you use today — and the one you’re likely to migrate to next.
LumaVet stocks veterinary chemistry analysers from multiple lineups. Tell us the case-mix you handle, and we’ll help you build a side-by-side comparison.
