Leica DM500 binocular biological microscope — 45° EZTube with integrated FN20 eyepieces, plan objectives and mains-or-battery LED illumination for routine veterinary microscopy.
Product Overview
The DM500 is Leica’s compound microscope for routine and teaching use. Its 45° EZTube carries the eyepieces integrated into the tubes with preset diopters — they cannot be lost, swapped or misadjusted between users, which matters in a practice where several people share one microscope.
The substage condenser arrives pre-installed, pre-focused and pre-centred, so the instrument is ready to use out of the box and stays aligned. It runs from mains or from rechargeable AA cells, which keeps it usable during a power cut or on an ambulatory visit.
Key Features
- 45° inclined binocular EZTube — integrated 10×/20 eyepieces with preset diopters, nothing to lose or misadjust
- Plan objectives 4× / 10× / 40× / 100× oil — flat field across the whole image
- Pre-installed, pre-focused and pre-centred Abbe condenser — no alignment step before use
- Condenser slot takes phase contrast and darkfield sliders, including a 4-position phase slider
- LED illumination with continuous intensity control, 3 W — consistent colour temperature for stained smears
- Runs on mains 100–240 V or on 1.2 V NiMH rechargeable AA cells — usable during a power cut or on an ambulatory visit
- SafetyStage design limits damage when a slide is driven into an objective
- EZStore integrated handle and cord wrap — carried and stowed without loose cables
- Total draw 5 W — no dedicated circuit needed

Why Choose DM500
- Integrated eyepieces with preset diopters — in a shared practice laboratory nobody has to reset the microscope before use, and eyepieces cannot go missing
- Pre-centred condenser — the instrument stays aligned, so image quality does not drift over months of use
- Battery capability — slide work continues during a power cut and the microscope can travel to a farm or stable
- Phase and darkfield slider slot — unstained wet preparations can be added later without changing microscope

FAQ
What slides does this microscope handle? Routine cytology smears (fine-needle aspirate, ear cytology, urine sediment), histopathology sections, faecal flotation and direct smears, and stained blood smears (Diff-Quik, Wright-Giemsa).
Why are the eyepieces fixed into the tubes? The EZTube integrates them deliberately. In a practice where several people share one microscope, eyepieces get swapped, dropped or lost and diopters get left on someone else’s setting. Integrated eyepieces with preset diopters remove all of that.
Can it really run on batteries? Yes — on 1.2 V NiMH rechargeable AA cells up to 2700 mAh. Do not fit non-rechargeable alkaline cells; the manufacturer’s manual specifically warns against them.
Can phase contrast be added later? Yes. The condenser has a slot for phase contrast and darkfield sliders, including a 4-position phase slider. Tell us which preparations you intend to read and we will quote the matching slider and objectives.
Binocular or the camera version? This listing is the binocular DM500. A version with an integrated wireless camera is listed separately for practices that record findings or teach from the microscope.
